vulcanite bottle stopper

Vulcanite bottle stopper found at Par beach......

Vulcanite bottle stoppers were invented by Charles Goodyear in 1844. They replaced wooden stoppers. They are made from a material called Ebonite, which was supposed to mimic ebony. The stoppers are made from a mixture of materials: natural rubber, linseed oil and sulphur. The manufacturing process is called 'Vulcanisation', and thus, the material was known as 'Vulcanite'.

It is always interesting if you can identify items found during beach cleaning, and vulcanite tend to have words / illustrations on the tops. Sadly on this occasion, i can only make out 'The ****** Brewery', i therefore am unable to trace this stopper.

Nevertheless, it is a cool find and i was really happy to have added this stopper to my collection :)
